Bonneville racers and teams for automotive classes

"Automotive" or even "cars" doesn't exactly seem the correct term to be used when describing the racing vehicles that set, and break, the land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Racing machines more accurately describes the meticulously engineered vehicles that show up year after year for the World of Speed at the Salt Flats. From those making their first attempt at a personal land speed record by joining the 130 MPH Club or the race seasoned teams that have run the Salt year after year.

There after been, and still are, many racers on the Salt that have made the track the success that it is it is in the motorsports industry. We've collected a few of these racing teams on this page to show the variety of teams involved in the land speed racing sport. Those automotive racing that are listed here and on other pages of this web site are but a few of those who have added their touch to the Bonneville Salt Flats. While this may seem like a long list it is by no means all inclusive of the automotive racing teams who race regularly at the Salt Flats

Art Arfons' Cyclops Streamliner - In 1962 Art Arfons built this jet powered car in an attempt to break the world land speed record. Although he didn't break the record in this particular car, he did set the record for open wheel/open cockpit cars at 342.88 MPH. That record is still in the books today. Art Arfons was once described as the "junk yard genius of the jet set". His cars were often crude, but they were extremely fast and were built for a fraction of the cost of his better financed rivals. His talent was in crafting scrap parts into race cars. The powerplant for this car is an U.S. Government scrap F104 J79 Starfighter jet engine that produced 17,500 HP. [Art Arfons' Cyclops Streamliner]

Bean Bandits Racing Team Streamliner - Drag racing constantly glides between science and magic and never more so than during its beginning when young geniuses tested their knowledge of physics against their boundless desire for more performance. At a time when anything could happen, Joaquin Arnett fashioned unimagined speed out of a smattering of junk pieces showered with innovation. What he got for his trouble were equal doses of winning accolades and heartbreak.

Sure, Joaquin Arnett and his Bean Bandits have been around since the first drag strip. If people can recite the names of the first crazies to trek to Muroc and run their Model A's across the barren expanse of the dry lake bed, surely there exist complete dates and speeds acknowledging the accomplishments of a free thinking group of racers from the '50s. But, retracing the achievements of this 76-year-old man's extensive history is like a sightless cartographer building a relief map. The path is carved in half remembered stories built on emotion, traced by stacks of curling photographs with forgotten names, littered with inaccurate newspaper articles and flagged by metal dash plate markers. Malcolm Campbell - The 'Speed Kings' as they were to be known, were a father and son pushing the boundaries of speed on water and land. Between them they achieved no less than 21 official world speed records, 11 on water and 10 on land. Donald had to work hard for his records, for unlike his father who was well off and spent virtually none of his own money on attempts, Donald had to use his own money, mortgage his home and battle on at times, with limited support. Donald's record breaking was in a time when some people thought it was no longer a matter of national pride. [Malcolm Campbell]
